“Exquisite Shells” is an extremely rare “royal” book publication. Franz Michael Regenfuss (born in Germany around 1713) was fascinated by natural history objects and became a painter and engraver. In 1754 he was employed by King Frederic V of Denmark and Norway, and produced twelve plates with shells drawn in minute detail. The drawings were all hand-colored, mostly by his wife Margaretha Helena Regenfuss. The accompanying text was from the hand of several authors; this is probably why this work is attributed to the illustrator (Regenfuss). The book was an immediate success but very few copies remain.
